Chapter 54: Fourteenth Floor, Waiting Room (1)

Affiliation: None

Patron Deity: First class, Omniscient Thunder Axe (Share percentage: 1.09%(-?.??%) / 100.00%)

Strength: 101.8

Agility: 101.0

Stamina: 99.3

Mana: 66.1

Skills: Lightning Essence lvl 8, … Bear’s Blood lvl 9, Awareness lvl 4, … Lightning Resistance lvl 5, Fire Resistance lvl 5, Poison Resistance lvl 10 (+4), Ice Resistance lvl 3 …

I must have killed at least thousands of bugs, yet my stat growth seemed disappointingly slow. Even though the bugs themselves weren’t particularly weak, my sluggish progress was caused by my stats being too high for the difficulty level of the floor.

My strength and agility stats had surpassed the milestone of 100 with stamina not far behind, so I wasn’t too surprised by the revelation.

Though the exact numbers slip my mind...

My mana had increased by a little over 4, while strength, agility, and stamina only rose around 1 each. Still, there was a silver lining, which was that my skills had leveled up slightly.

Both Poison Resistance and Flame Resistance had improved, and I had unlocked Ice Resistance. Despite being new, the skill was already at level 3. It seemed like all the effort I had spent enduring the toxic fumes hadn’t been in vain.

But why has Bear’s Blood leveled up?

Bear’s Blood usually resonated when I wielded my axe, but I hadn’t used it on the thirteenth floor.

Did it resonate...when I felt that strange sensation while searching for the ice bug queen’s key?

That was the only moment that made sense to me.

Well, kind of makes sense. Bears are known to raid beehives for honey, after all.

A familiar example would be Winnie-the-Pooh. This realization struck me as oddly satisfying. I had always assumed that Bear’s Blood only related to physical power, but now it seemed to have broader applications than I had initially thought. Its utility extended far beyond raw strength, making it fairly versatile

It seems like that is the only major change... Wait.

Just as I was about to close the status window, a message from Ha Hee-Jeong popped up.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Su-Hyeok, have you checked your status window?

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Yeah, I just looked at it. Why?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): You should check out the training room.

Her sudden mention of the training room left me curious.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): The training room? I was planning to shower and rest first. What’s up?

Why bring it up now?

After thinking briefly about her statement, I still couldn’t understand why she would bring it up.

Maybe she wants me to train since I mostly relied on Lightning Essence during the thirteenth floor?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Once a climber enters the waiting room after clearing the thirteenth floor, the tower grants them new features in the training room. Take a look before you shower. оᛒƐṥ

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Really? What’s been added?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): It\'s better if you see it for yourself.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Alright, give me a second.

I quickly stood and headed toward the training room. As I passed the bathroom, I could hear Doppy humming from within. In hindsight, maybe I should have told it to wash later. However, since it was already there, there was no point in making a fuss about it now.

As soon as I entered the training room, a notification appeared in front of me.

[Congratulations! As a reward for clearing the thirteenth floor, two new features have been added to the training room.]

[First, the training room’s quality depends on the climber’s leaderboard placement. Additionally, if the climber wishes to improve the quality, they can spend achievement points to upgrade it.]

[Challenger Kwon Su-Hyeok is currently ranked first. As a reward, his training room has been upgraded to the highest quality.]

As the system\'s emotionless voice concluded, I couldn\'t help but think about how merciless the tower was. Even the training room\'s upgrades were tied to one’s ranking. Add on the fact that if I hadn’t entered the room, I wouldn’t have known about these perks at all.

Perhaps this was a one-time reward that would disappear if I didn’t claim it now.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Hey, Hee-Jeong. If you don’t enter the training room on the fourteenth floor, do you miss out on this reward?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Oh, how did you figure that out? Yeah, if you don’t claim it now, it’ll be gone.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Ah, I see. I just had a feeling.

It was just as I suspected. Of course, most rational climbers would take advantage of the training room, but after the exhausting chase on the thirteenth floor, I doubted a climber would want to train immediately. But the tower didn’t offer rewards to those unwilling to push their limits, even when fatigued.

I didn’t have much time to dwell on it, though, as the training room transformed rapidly.

What had previously been a room the size of a tennis court quickly expanded to something resembling a small stadium. @@novelbin@@

Hmm, not bad.

Now, I had enough room to practice my techniques, like testing aerial maneuvers with Kashatum’s Sky Shoes or experimenting with Lightning Essence.

The room’s size wasn’t the only thing that changed. Weapon racks materialized on one side of the room along with strange devices and tools whose functions I could only guess at. Judging by the round bracelets that resembled training weights, I assumed everything was some sort of exercise equipment.

The room was incomparable to its previous state. Now that the expansion finished, another message appeared.

[Top-grade training rooms allow climbers to adjust the room’s dimensions to their liking. The maximum size increases with each floor the climber ascends.]

The message surprised me. The room was already quite large, but apparently, it could become even larger. Although I didn’t need that just yet, who knows?

Perhaps someday I would need a room kilometers long just to practice advanced maneuvers with Lightning Essence.

This is great.

Looking around the newly upgraded, luxurious room, I couldn’t help but feel satisfied. As I continued exploring, a fresh notification explaining the other new feature appeared.

[Second, \'Combat Training\' has been added.]

[Climbers can spend achievement points to recreate their past battles within the training room.]

[The difficulty level can be adjusted, with the achievement point cost determined by the tower.]

[Combat training allows climbers to increase stats and skill levels, though the growth rate will be slower compared to clearing floors.]

[To initiate combat training, please say \'Simulated combat.\']

Combat training, huh? Not a bad feature.

While someone like Cole might have an extraordinary memory, most people’s recollections weren’t perfect. There was a significant difference between mentally replaying a fight and physically reenacting it. This would help me pinpoint any mistakes or gaps I had in previous battles.

For instance, I had considered revisiting my encounter with that mysterious foe on the eleventh floor. But then, another notification interrupted my thoughts.

[※Warning: Losing in combat training may result in death and equipment may be damaged.※]

[Defeated enemies do not drop items.]

What? I can actually die during training?

And to top it off, my equipment could end up damaged, too.

I assumed it was just an illusion or a reenactment…

I felt a bit dumbfounded. The notification clearly referred to it as training, mentioning it would recreate previous combat scenarios. However, the fact that death was a real possibility meant it wasn’t some mere illusion or recollection.

Is the tower reviving these enemies?

Considering Ha Hee-Jeong had experienced regression, I didn’t doubt it was possible, though it was still hard to fathom. It seemed best to ask her directly, so I quickly shot her a message.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Hey, what’s the deal with this combat training?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): What do you mean?

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): It says the room can recreate battles, but I don’t get how I would die.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): It’s because they summon the actual opponents. Remember the bosses we’ve fought?

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Huh? Yeah, of course.

I recalled the goblin paladin, Seraphim Queen, Weretiger King, and the Skill-Thief Gremlin… But I wasn’t sure why she was suddenly bringing this up now.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): There are multiple zones on each floor. Because of that, not every climber enters the same section, got it?

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Yea, so what…? Wait, that’s right! Each area has to have a boss.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Exactly. Most floors have dozens of bosses. I’m not sure if they’re clones or some sort of replicas, but that’s how it works.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): So, combat training lets you actually summon those bosses into the room.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Yep, and the training room adjusts the environment to match the original battle conditions as closely as possible.

Combat training wasn’t just a simple reenactment; it was a full-fledged battle. Although it wasn’t literally summoning the enemies from the past, it still summoned an identical replica of a previous enemy.

At first, I had been eager, excited even, to face off against that mysterious opponent again, but my enthusiasm had been tempered. I realized I couldn’t take this lightly. Even though I had won that fight, I had struggled at the start.

While some of it had been due to my opponent’s bluffing, battles were unpredictable. It was unreasonable to expect that I would know all of my enemy\'s abilities in advance.

I reminded myself of the lesson I learned from the fight with Karaksh.

No matter how strong you are, never get complacent.

Victory in combat wasn’t always about sheer strength. Even though I was confident I was stronger, that mysterious opponent was no slouch either.

I resolved to take the training seriously. Rather than relying on Flash Strike, I would focus on honing my techniques and finesse. Additionally, this was the perfect chance to refine my axemanship.

While I mentally prepared myself, a new idea quietly surfaced in my mind.

How many climbers will take this combat training seriously?

It was a legitimate question. In essence, combat training allowed climbers to spend their achievement points to experience a life-or-death fight.

Sure, it offered a chance to improve their stats, level up their skills, and gain practical experience… but they could also end up dead after spending their hard-earned points And if they decided to fight a weaker opponent just to be safe, it would still cost them points.

Is the training worth the price?

I had my doubts. From what I had heard, many climbers were completely worn out after clearing a floor, with about half collapsing from exhaustion.

Given that, I couldn’t imagine most of them willingly risking their lives for combat training.

But then again… if you want to stay sharp, you have to train.

The truth was that this kind of training was crucial. There was a limit to how much you could grow progressing through the tower by just surviving. Most valuable lessons in combat came on the brink of defeat, not during easy victories.

Those moments of near-death were often what made an individual realize, “Oh, I definitely can’t make that mistake again.”

Instead of waiting for another dire situation, learning as much as possible from familiar opponents made more sense. Also, although it would only be by a slight amount, my stats and skill levels would increase.

Plus, the tower mentioned you can adjust the difficulty of the battles.

As long as I didn’t push myself too far, there was no reason not to engage in these combat sessions. I couldn’t afford to focus only on the present. To ascend the tower, I needed to continue honing my skills.

Points may be a limited resource, but my life was far more precious. After all, you could only spend your points if you were still alive.

There is no way around it, the best way to master combat is by actually fighting.

Eventually, other climbers would come to the same conclusion. Those with ambition and the drive to improve would take full advantage of the training. Of course, some would inevitably fall behind...

These thoughts and ideas seemed perfect to share in the Community. I briefly considered how I would organize the information. It would not only help build my reputation but also motivate other climbers to step up their game.

[... The Tower of Ordeal is not forgiving, so climbers may not have another opportunity beyond this floor. Even if they don’t plan to train, it would be wise to at least visit the training room, just in case. Ultimately, survival in the tower requires…]

As I was drafting my post for the community, the elixir the ice bug queen had dropped suddenly came to mind. I had stashed it in my inventory and completely forgotten about it until now.

Hmm, what should I do with this? Is it safe to consume right now?

I decided to message Ha Hee-Jeong again for advice.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Hey, I got an elixir after killing the ice bug queen. Should I take it now?

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Oh, right! Hang on. Does yours have a warning label? Mine did.

- Kwon Su-Hyeok (Fourteenth Floor): Yeah, it does.

- Ha Hee-Jeong (Fourteenth Floor): Then definitely don’t take it now!
